The Guardian reports Sean Burch from Washington State climbed Kilimanjaro from Gate to summit in a record 5 hours 28 minutes and 58 seconds.
Italian tourist, Bruno Brunod, set the previous record in 2001 of 8 hours 34 minutes and 52 seconds via the Marangu route. Before that was Christian Strangel, an Australian, whose record was nine hours and five minutes.
