Interracial Marriage Surprises Parents and Rotarians on Everest

An attempt by the Rotarians to plant their centennial flag on Everest got a surprise: the summit’s first marriage.

Bride Moni Mulepati, 24, and groom Pem Dorjee, 23, from Nepal exchanged their vows on Monday on the summit in the first known summit marriage.

She is from the Newar community and he is a Sherpa an unusual pairing in a country where most marriages are arranged by parents and people tend to stick to their castes.

The couple removed their oxygen masks for the 10-minute cememony and will stay at the bride’s home when they return. They are promising another ceremony for family members in Kathmandu according to the AP.

They were part of the Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition.
