High Point, New Jersey, Monument Area Restricted Because of Falling Mortar (but Monument is still open)

New Jersey has restricted access to the area around the High Point Monument because of falling mortar. Mortar is missing on all sides but the worst is on the south side. Mortar has been reported to have been falling on the monument since 2011. The south and west sides of the monument are closed but the north and east sides are still open as is access to the tower where you can still climb the 291 steps to the top of the monument which was completed in 1930. The tower had a $3.6 million overhaul including the mortar joints in 2005 after being closed for 8 years.
