Fatality on North Side of Mount Hood

A climber on the north side of Mount Hood near the Coe Glacier about the 9,500 foot level near the Snow Dome died on June 16.

Details are sketchy and poor weather meant that his body was left on the mountain overnight. The hiker was identified as Robert Wiebe, 58, of Langley, British Columbia. Officials had issued warnings about climbing the mountain above 8,000 feet following an an avalanche on June 5 on Mount Rainier. It is the first fatal accident on the mountain since December 2009 when three perished. Only one body from that party has been recovered.
